Beware Of Fake Book Reviews

September 4th, 2012

According to The Telegraph, bestselling writers Ian Rankin, Lee Child, Susan Hill, Val McDermid and Helen FitzGerald, said the widespread use of “fake identities” was causing untold damage to the publishing world.

Apparently, RJ Ellory, the bestselling British crime writer, was exposed for using pseudonyms to pen fake glowing reviews about his “magnificent genius” online while simultaneously criticising his rivals.

The article says RJ Ellory has sold over one million copies of his books. As you, the reader know, there are fake reviews of everything from electronics to escorts. This doesn’t justify the behavior. When the perp not only writes glowing reviews of his own work but also slams other authors of their own work – scandalous.

As the founder of BookBarista.com and as an author as well, please don’t write fake reviews, glowing or poor. This creates an environment of deception. We already have enough of that in the world of finance, corporations, and politics. We don’t need it when purchasing items, especially books. Writers, in my eyes, have always been a breed of individual who seeks out knowledge, even if I don’t agree with their findings.

Maintain some sort of reality within the writing world… which does sound odd since it is a form of expression – subjective and objective in every way. So let me rephrase that – don’t allow fraudulent reviews.

Code Error

August 24th, 2012

Just so you, the site users, are aware, BookBarista.com had a shipping label being added to the checkout price for Featured Ad and Extended Ad prices of $3.99. We have solved the issue thanks to Intecons, our favorite programming company, and have since issued the appropriate refunds to those users who were overcharged $3.99.

As you can see, BookBarista isn’t a massive place; such as Craigslist. But we strive to provide a place for authors, writers, readers, and book sellers that is just for them. Honesty and integrity is what it’s about. And those users who continue to use the site are very much appreciated.

Thanks for sticking with us and helping to get the word out!

Be Aware Of SCAM Emails

August 2nd, 2012

WARNING!!! DO NOT SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION WITH ANYONE ONLINE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DON’T KNOW THAT PERSON.

I just want to quickly share a SCAM email that I received from “out of the blue”.

Subject Hello,
From Sgt Cassandra Roach
To undisclosed recipients:
Reply-To sgtcassandraroach@yahoo.com.cn
Date 2012-07-04 04:01

Hello,

I am Sgt Cassandra Roach, with the United Nations troop recently withdrawn from Iraq. Based on the United States legislative and executive arm of government decision for withdrawing troops from Iraq , I have been deployed to Afghanistan.

I want to inform you that I and my Colleagues in the same Division sometime in April 18,2010, discovered a pair of cement sheds filled with metal boxes. Inside each box was $4 million in cash — $750 million American dollars in all. I have in my possession the sum of $32 Million United State Dollars which is my share from the money.

I have disguised/packed and deposited this money as a treasure box from Iraq in care of a Red Cross agent. It is under my power to approve whoever comes forth for this money.

Instead of allowing these terrorists to get the money and spend it on purchasing arms from Russia, it is better channeled to saving the world which i propose supporting charity homes, being a military woman, I am not allowed to parade such amount and as a trained Military expert, I am always security conscious. If you accept, I will transfer the money to you where you will be the beneficiary.

I have a hundred percent authentic means for transporting this money to your location through Red Cross jet using my position.

Please if you are interested in this transaction I will give to you the complete details you need for us to carry out this transaction successfully. I decided to find someone that is real and not imaginary and that is why I went to a secured website where I can be sure that the person is real. Where we are now we can only communicate through our military communication a facility which is secured so nobody can monitor our emails, then I can explain in details to you. I will only reach you through email, because our calls might be monitored, I just have to be sure whom I am dealing with.

If you are interested please send me your Full Name, Physical Address and Personal mobile number, so I can call you for further inquiries when I am out of our military network. I am writing from a fresh email account so if you are not interested do not reply to this email and please delete this message, if no response after some days I will then search for someone else. I am doing this on trust, you should understand and you should know that as a trained military expert I will always play safe in case you are the bad type, but I pray you are not. $32 million US is a lot of money which is the dream of anyone.

I wait for your contact details so we can go on. In less than 7 days the money should be in your custody and I will come over for my money when I am finally withdrawn hopefully before the end of this month.I will give to you 30% of the sum and 70% is for me. I hope I am being fair on this deal.

Sincerely,

Sgt Cassandra Roach

Thanks for reading this SCAM email. DON’T BELIEVE IT!

Congratulations, Smashwords!

Smashwords

Smashwords and its CEO, Mark Coker, were featured in Forbes. Smashwords is an independent publisher of online books. They started with nothing and now expect $12 million in revenue this year.

What’s cool about Smashwords is that they are an independent company of 14 workers who support independent, indie, and commercial authors. They cater to the little guy (and the big guy too) giving them access to the big publishing corporations that might not otherwise be possible. Not only that, Mark Coker has been a positive inspiration to BookBarista.com and has pointed his customers in our direction so they could advertise with us for FREE:) That is an awesome gesture in this world of competition and it shows his spirit of professional duty to the lesser known guy.

So congrats to Smashwords, Mark Coker, and his staff of dedicated souls. You’re doing it right!

One Simple Question?

July 6th, 2012

Why does BookBarista.com exist?

I wanted to create a place where people who write, collect, or sell books (and book related products) could show off their stuff and shop too. The site is for book folk. Book folk tend to be very bright whether you agree with their stance on particular positions or not. It is the writers and the readers of the world who make the world explode with new ideas.

It’s really that simple.
